Broad Street, Bristol
The heart of this building and its Pre-Raphaelite art nouveau style facade - here at No. 38 Broad Street - were created in 1900 by Henry Williams to a design by William Neatby, the chief ceramics expert for Doulton and Co. The premises were Edward Everardís main printing works. Most the red brick building was demolished in 1970 but the arts and crafts facade was preserved because of it being the largest decorative Carrara marble tile facade of its kind in Britain. The contributions of William Morris and Johannes Gutenberg to printing and literature are celebrated in the design and behind each figure are typefaces representing their work. After the demolition of the original building the facade was incorporated into a new building which is currently used as offices by the Direct Line group. It is Grade II* listed and is currently for sale.
