St Martin's Church has a plain spire and a Norman north arcade and chancel. The drum-shaped font is also Norman. The church path leads out onto Ermine Street.

Ermine Street was the Roman road which ran from London to Lincoln and York. Ancaster was a Roman station known as Causennae located on Ermine Street. Coins, mosaic pavements and foundations have been found in the locality. Ancaster is now best-known for its stone.
