Ermine Street was the Roman road which ran from London to Lincoln and York. Ancaster was a Roman station known as Causennae located on Ermine Street. Coins, mosaic pavements and foundations have been found in the locality.

This is just north of Ancaster at the entrance to Crowland Farm; Ermine Street is just the other side of the hedge on the left.
