Flowering mugwort
Flowering mugwort
It is surrounded by red goosefoot > LinkExternal link which will soon also be coming into flower. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) abounds on hedgebanks and roadside verges in most parts of England, frequently growing up to 1m tall. Mugwort > LinkExternal link is closely allied to the Common Wormwood, but can quite easily be distinguished in that its leaves are white on the under-surfaces only. The name of this plant is said to derive from its use in flavouring drinks, mainly beer before the introduction of hops. As a medicinal herb it has long been used in traditional medicine for its stimulant and slightly tonic properties.
