Captain Henry Kater's Summer House, Shanklin Manor
Tucked away in the grounds of the former Shanklin Manor, a sign on this small Grade 2-listed building reads:
'IN THIS SUMMER-HOUSE, IN MAY 1819, CAPTAIN H. KATER, F.R.S., DETERMINED THE LENGTH OF THE PENDULUM, VIBRATING SECONDS, AT SEA LEVEL, TO BE 39.13614 INCHES.'
