Pleached hornbeam walk, Newton Rigg College
Pleached hornbeam walk, Newton Rigg College
'Pleaching is a method of training trees to produce a narrow screen or hedge by tying in and interlacing flexible young shoots along a supporting framework' (quote from the Royal Horticultural Society LinkExternal link ). The effect has been likened to a hedge on stilts.
The pleached walk shown here was created by horticulture students at the college LinkExternal link . It is complemented by low hedges of clipped box.
The gardens at Newton Rigg College are used for teaching, so the public are not normally admitted. This photo was taken on a charity open day, part of the National Garden Scheme LinkExternal link .
