Mule sheep at Venta Icenorum
Mule sheep at Venta Icenorum
Mule sheep are cross-bred sheep with a Bluefaced Leicester as the sire, and the dams being either Swaledale or Northumberland-type Blackface ewes, both the latter breeds being born and reared under the harsh conditions prevailing on the northern fells and moors and noted for qualities of hardiness, thriftiness and longevity. The lambs are said to inherit the best qualities of both parents and greatly benefit from the hybrid vigour produced by the contrasting pure breeds. The Mule ewe reputedly has the ability to produce and rear ample crops of lambs, make the optimum use of food provided and will lamb with the minimum of attention.
