Temple Meads Station, Bristol
Temple Meads Station, Bristol
It is now possible to reach the west side of Temple Meads Railway Station from the commercially developed area of Temple Mead Quay or from the Bristol Ferry Boat Companyís landing stage on the Floating Harbour. (Both are out of sight but on the left of this picture). This is on the west side of the station complex. It is Brunelís original 1841 train shed and as such it is the oldest part of the station albeit that it is now a covered car park). The earliest train sheds were wooden structures, often with unglazed openings to allow smoke and steam to escape. This one is 72 feet (22†m) wide with a wooden box-frame roof and cast iron columns disguised as hammerbeams above Tudor arches. It is believed to be the widest mock-hammerbeam roof in England. This entrance into the main station marks the junction between the original terminus and the 1870s extension.
