Belgrave Hall, Belgrave Village, Leicester
This Grade II* listed Georgian house was built for Edmund Cradock (sic), a hosiery merchant and part of the local “nouveau riche” fraternity between 1709-13. Many individuals and families have owned it since then, one of the more recent being Thomas Morley, a Leicester hosiery manufacturer, who sold it to Leicester Corporation in 1936 for £10,500, at the same time that the Corporation acquired Belgrave House, situated opposite. The road in front of both of these properties was known as “The Gravel” until two owners of Belgrave Hall arranged to have it re-named “Church Road” in 1889. From 1936 onwards “The Hall” was a museum and its gardens were opened for visits by members of the public. The hall is now owned by Leicester City Council and now functions solely as a hireable functions venue, although the grounds are regularly open to the public. This is the rear, west facing and grander side of the hall.
