NT9239 : Etal castle: the great tower

taken 8 years ago, near to Etal, Northumberland, England

Etal castle: the great tower
Etal castle: the great tower
View from the south-west. The Manners family received their "licence to crenellate" the castle from Edward III in 1342, which was surely welcome, given that warlike Scots were only 10 km away to the north. The remains of a curtain wall that enclosed a courtyard can just be seen. Grade-I listed: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
