The immaculate village street of whitewashed buildings is much photographed and dates back to the refurbishments of Lord Joicey, the coal-mining magnate: LinkExternal link , who bought the Etal estate in 1908. The late Alec Clifton-Taylor would surely have appreciated the chunky 'rustic' slates.
