Crichton Kirk
Crichton Kirk
Established as a collegiate church by William Crichton (LinkExternal link ) in 1449, perhaps to atone for his involvement in the 'black dinner' murders of members of the Douglas clan in 1440. The nave (to left) has disappeared, but otherwise the kirk is an outstanding survivor of a pre-reformation Scottish church and is A-listed: LinkExternal link . Note the Romanesque arched door to the chancel. The church is now far too large for the hamlet of Crichton and only open occasionally.
