Longtown Castle
Longtown Castle
Free to enter, the castle has real atmosphere, not least because of the absence of manicured lawns. There are mown paths, but that apart nature has the run of the place. At Domesday in 1085 the land was recorded as belonging to Roger de Lacy, but there was no castle. Hugh de Lacy developed the first castle here in the mid-12th century and it was rebuilt in stone by his son Walter de Lacy around 1220 and it is this building we see today. The view through the gatehouse.
