Babraham: St Peter - Benet Monument
Babraham: St Peter - Benet Monument
In the south aisle is an enormous marble 17th-century monument to Richard and Thomas Benet [or Bennet], "two brothers, and both of them baronetts", the inscription explains. "Two white, life-size standing figures against a black backcloth. They are spectrally thin and joyless in their surging Berninesque draperies, one facing us, the other in profile. Their gesticulating is also Berninesque, un-English and in weird contrast to their gaunt faces" (Nikolaus Pevsner).
