The Saxon west tower was partly dismantled in 1840 to be replaced by a "taller and better" Gothic version with overdone pinnacles: the change is stonework is clearly visible. Pevsner calls this "vandalism" but the church is still Grade-I listed: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
