St Mary, Conistone - Mossdale memorial, 50 years on
St Mary, Conistone - Mossdale memorial, 50 years on
A stone in memory of the six cavers who died in Mossdale Cavern in 1967. The 50th anniversary commemorations had been held only a couple of weeks before this, hence the flowers, so it was timely and poignant to read this. Their bodies, when found, were left to rest in the cave, so this is a deserving exception to the general rule that memorial in churchyards can only relate to those buried there. See SE0169 : Memorial Plaque at Mossdale Scar. for the other memorial at the cave entrance, and a description of the disaster and failed rescue attempt. Much more detail is online at LinkExternal link ; there is also a framed copy, on the church wall, of Olive Pratt's poem SD9867 : St Mary, Conistone - Mossdale memorial poem.
St Mary's church, Conistone
The church was originally built in the 11th-12th centuries, i.e. Norman times, but was largely rebuilt in 1846 while retaining some features from as early as the 14th century. It is situated at the northern end of the small village of Conistone in Wharfedale.

Its parish was taken out of the ancient parish of Burnsall; while originally in the Diocese of Ripon, it passed to the new Diocese of Bradford in 1919, and to the combined Diocese of Leeds in 2014. It now forms part of a combined parish with Kettlewell, and the benefice of Kettlewell with Conistone, Hubberholme and Arncliffe covering Upper Wharfedale and Littondale.
