Rushes in the Pinxton Arm, near the Boat Inn
Before the railways, this canal was the main freight route in and out of this area. In the 1830s canal boats took coal from Pinxton to Nottingham, the River Trent, Hickling, Leicester, Gunthorpe, Newark and Bridgford, as well as 'goods' to Leicester and Wolverhampton. They brought to Pinxton cargoes as diverse as bones from Nottingham, corn from the Trent and 'goods' from Birmingham, Derby, London, Shardlow and Nottingham. [Volunteers at the Friends of the Cromford Canal are creating a database from the original toll receipts.]
