The Phoenix, York
The Phoenix, York
This George Street pub dates from the late 18th century although it was extensively refitted in the late 19th century. It is believed to have taken its name from the Phoenix Iron Foundry which stood nearby in the mid 19th century. The pub was once part of the John Smith estate but was bought by the present owners in 2008; it is now a thriving establishment specialising in real ale and jazz. See SE6051 : The Phoenix for how it looked in 2007.
