St Martha's Church
St Martha's Church
Church sited on the top of St Martha's Hill. Originating from the 12th Century (although a previous church was recorded in the Domesday Book), it had a tall tower at the west end. However in 1745 it was severely damaged by an explosion at a gunpowder mill situated at the foot of the hill, with the tower collapsing. It remained partly ruined until the mid 19th Century when it was rebuilt by architect Henry Woodyer, who was responsible for the restoration of many Surrey churches, with the new church opening in 1850. Grade II listed - see LinkExternal link.
