Red Arrows Aerobatics Display at Blackpool
Red Arrows Aerobatics Display at Blackpool
Part of the display given by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (aka the Red Arrows) at the 2017 Blackpool Airshow. All the aircraft (BAE Hawk T1 jets) are flying towards the show from out over the sea. At this point in the manoeuvre (which I think may have called "Detonator"), the top five jets "break out" leaving the lower four to carry on towards us.

The characteristic "smoke trails" are created by releasing diesel fuel into the exhaust; this vaporizes in the hot exhaust flow, then re-condenses into very fine droplets that give the appearance of a white smoke trail. These trails allow the pilots to judge the wind speed and direction far more accurately than by any other means and they also add impact to the display sequence when viewed by the audience on the ground. At this point in the display, the pilots in the lower four aircraft have added red and blue dyes to the diesel producing the red, white and blue colours for which the team is famous (LinkExternal link RAF Red Arrows).
