Kingspit Lane
Kingspit Lane
Kingspit Lane south of the Petworth to Pulborough main road. This part of Kingspit Lane was recorded as a public bridleway in 2015, on the basis of long use. It is not difficult to see from its deeply incised character that there has been a road here for many hundreds of years perhaps millennia. The lane was incorporated into the Petworth to Pulborough turnpike in the C18, but replaced with the more direct route west from the Welldiggers Arms in 1825, and the lane ceased to be a public highway. However, it continued to be used as a public path, and found its way back onto the definitive map in 2015.
