Eroding cliffs at Barton on Sea
Eroding cliffs at Barton on Sea
The cliffs in this area consist of layers of permeable sands and gravels above clay and are subject to rapid erosion by the action of water causing slumping at the boundary with the clay. Wave action and storms remove the shingle debris at the base. The cliffs here are to the east of the protective groynes south of Barton on Sea and subject to accelerated erosion without a replenishing supply of shingle from the west via longshore drift. They stand further back, have a steeper profile and have less vegetation than the cliffs immediately south of Barton on Sea.
