Leck or Lock?

A search brings up lots of Kilwhinlock references suggesting that this is a widely accepted alternative to Kilwhinleck (used by the OS at all scales) for the name of the farm or settlement.

The settlement was Kilwhinlick in the OS 6" 1st edition of 1843, Kilwhonlig in Blaeu's map of 1654, Kilquhynlik or Kilquhonlik in the 16th-century registers of the Great Seal of Scotland and Kilconlik in the Exchequer Rolls of 1440. It appears to derive from the cell (cille) of a shadowy saint which was somewhere near the present farm. but of which there are only scant remains.

OS place names are frequently unreliable and at variance with local usage. Where there is an established local usage, such as by owners or tenants of farms or houses, this should be recorded and preserved alongside cartographical innovations.
