Lyveden Cottage, Harley Way, Brigstock
Lyveden Cottage, Harley Way, Brigstock
Mid 18th century Grade II Listed house. The cottage was built around 1690 from stone intended for the lodge and initially with a thatched roof. Lyveden was acquired by Lady Gowran in 1732 and the cottage was described as the ‘Verderer’s House’, tenanted by the estate for the keeper of the Royal forest. In 1740 Lady Gowran commissioned a Dougald Campbell to complete the lodge, adding a second floor and domed roof but he plans were never executed. For years it served as a small farmstead and gamekeeper’s lodge, even after the National Trust purchased Lyveden in April 1922 after the war interrupted an option to purchase it in 1913. In 1958 the Trust advertised in the Times and Country Life for a hermit to live at the Cottage, but with no electricity or running water at the time this was a big expectation. A tea room opened here in April 2013 and by the August new volunteers were being sought due to its success.
