Downs landmarks
The concrete water tower looming large above the old toilet block is a well-worn image. The latter was originally a waiting room before offering a needy public some relief whilst out on the expanses of the Downs. A blue plaque above the women's entrance records the life of an attendant, Victoria Hughes, who spent most of her working life here from 1929-82. She befriended the prostitutes that used to frequent this area, giving many girls some much-needed care.
