TQ1649 : 1-11 High Street

taken 2 years ago, near to Dorking, Surrey, Great Britain

1-11 High Street
1-11 High Street
Building at the junction of High Street and North Street. Behind was the King's Head pub with the former pub yard, accessed through the arch on the right of the photo, now a small group of shops. From 1845 to 1902, this building housed Dorking's first post office, as can be seen from the Francis Frith photo from 1900 - LinkExternal link. Following the move of the post office to a new building in South Street, the building received some Edwardian embellishment - see Francis Frith photos from 1907 (in the background) LinkExternal link and 1922 LinkExternal link. Some of this has since been toned down - note the absence of the ball finials on the roof parapet in this photo.
