Hawkhurst: the Colonnade
The Colonnade - a row of weather-boarded shops sharing one long canopy - stretches more than 50 yards along the main east-west road in the middle of Hawkhurst, and must surely be the village's most distinctive and memorable feature.

The photo shows only the western end - in architectural terms, the whole is an almost symmetrical composition: A-B-A-B-A, where the B's are two taller 'pavilions', the A's are lower ranges. LinkExternal link Each portion is three bays wide - with the exception of the easternmost 'A', which extends to four bays (possibly as the result of rebuilding at some stage).

Both Pevsner" and the listing text suggest an early 19th century date. At that time a planned shopping development would have been entirely novel in a village context. Had the whole been built in brick, the effect would be quite urban - the weather-boarded timber structure (and overall small scale) mitigate that impression.

The columns of the colonnade are of cast-iron, and quite slender. They are currently painted black, though I remember a time when they were white - which was perhaps more fitting.
