Sheephill Quarry
Sheephill Quarry
Sheep Hill itself is on the left, framed against the Clyde. On its summit are the remains of the fort mentioned in the end-note. The present picture, taken from a well-used path on Kilpatrick Braes, shows how close the summit is to the working part of the quarry.

Dumbarton Rock can be seen beyond the large pit on the right; it is nearly three times as far away as that pit. The wooded high ground behind the right-hand side of that pit is part of Dumbuck Hill, which is the site of another large quarry.
Sheep Hill Fort

Sheep Hill is the site of a fort that is marked on the 1:25000 and 1:50000 OS maps. The remains of a vitrified fort on the summit are within a larger, later enclosure. See LinkExternal link (at Canmore) for further archaeological details. The fort is a scheduled monument (see LinkExternal link at Historic Environment Scotland), and hence is protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. Excavations were carried out at the end of the nineteenth century, and in the 1970s. As of 2017, the site is within a few metres of the operational area of a working quarry, Sheephill Quarry.
