Craigarestie is marked on OS maps from the first edition (1860) onwards. The name applies to an extended area rather than to a particular line of crags. The author of the relevant entry in the OS Name Books of 1860 explains, unconvincingly, that "this name in proper English means the 'craig of resting'"; a Gaelic origin is more likely. More usefully, the same entry goes on to describe the extent of the area so named. The Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland (1884) describes Craigarestie as "a chief summit of the Kilpatrick Hills, in Old Kilpatrick Parish, Dumbartonshire. It culminates 1½ mile NNE of Bowling, on the SW side of Loch Humphrey, at 1166 feet above sea level". As of 2017, the name is misspelled "Creigarestie" on OS maps at some scales.
