Statue of Peter Denny: armorial detail
Statue of Peter Denny: armorial detail
This detail is from the northern side of the statue's pedestal, that is, the side facing NS3975 : Dumbarton Municipal Buildings. For a view of the statue as a whole, and for its main description, see NS3975 : Statue of Peter Denny. Click on the end-note title for other views of it.

What is shown in the present picture is the coat of arms of Denny of Dumbarton, matriculated on the 20th of March 1911, and therefore post-dating the statue itself by about 13 years (the statue was finished in 1898, but it was not unveiled in front of the municipal buildings until 1902).

The heraldic details are set out in the first volume of "Armorial Families" (by Arthur Charles Fox-Davies, 1929):

"Denny of Dumbarton: ... Azure, three suns in their splendour in chief or, and in the honour point a martlet of the last. Mantling: azure and or. Crest: on a wreath of his liveries, a dexter hand erect, pointing with two fingers at a sun in his splendour, all proper. Motto: 'Fortis et Benignus'."
Statue of Peter Denny

This statue of the shipbuilder and engineer Peter Denny is by William "Hamo" Thornycroft. It was completed in 1898, and was presented to the burgh by Mrs Denny. Later, when the Municipal Buildings Link were built on land presented to the burgh by Lord Overtoun, it was decided to locate the statue beside those buildings.
