Singing Ringing Tree - A Panopticon for Burnley
Singing Ringing Tree - A Panopticon for Burnley
Panopticons (2003-2007) was a unique creative project to erect a series of 21st century landmarks across East Lancashire as symbols of the renaissance of the area.
The 'Singing Ringing Tree', the Panopticon chosen for Burnley, was selected through an invited competition and public consultation process to find an original idea for Burnley's new landmark.
Designed by architects Tonkin Liu, 'Singing Ringing Tree' is a unique musical sculpture constructed from pipes of galvanised steel, which harnesses the energy of the prevailing winds to produce a low tuneful song. Some pipes are structural only while others are musical with a cut across their width enabling the sound. To ensure that the pipes are in harmony, they have been tuned according to their length by adding holes to the underside of each.
