Seat On Pole Hill
Seat On Pole Hill
The obelisk to the left of TQ3894 : Pole Hill Trig stands on the pre-1850 Greenwich Meridian; it used to provide a due north datum point for the telescopes at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. In 1884 the "New" Greenwich Meridian was adopted internationally (except by the French) on a line that runs nineteen feet to the East of the pillar. For an explanation and to see a plaque commemorating that T.E. Lawrence didn't build a house here see TQ3894 : Obelisk Inscriptions.
