Gawthorpe Hall, Lancs
Gawthorpe Hall, Lancs
Situated down a drive off the A671 Burnley Road, Gawthorpe Hall was built between 1600 and 1605 for the Rev Lawrence Shuttleworth, whose family had settled at Gawthorpe by the end of the 14th Century. Alterations have since taken place at Gawthorpe including the raising the exterior of the house by Sir Charles Barry in 1850-2. At the same time, he also had the house extensively renovated and refurnished the interior, as well as laying out a formal garden. In 1972, the house and grounds were given to the National trust, and leased to Lancashire County Council for educational use. Inside the house, there is the Gawthorpe Textile Collection which includes needlework, lace and embroidery. For SatNav purposes, the postcode for Gawthorpe Hall is BB12 8UA.
