Church of St James the Great, East Malling: from the west
The church stands a little way back from the crossroads at the north end of the High Street - and its presence there, I think, helps make that crossroads the centre of the village.

By sheer good luck I was passing by on a Thursday afternoon: the church was open, and I was invited in by cheerful parish volunteers who not only showed me round, but also treated me to tea and chocolate biscuits. Many thanks, gentlemen, for your hospitality.

Looking closely at this photo, I believe I can see an 'archaeological' detail that isn't mentioned either in Pevsner or in the parish's excellent guide-book. Isn't there the 'ghost' of a small round-headed window just above the clock-face? On the north side of the tower a small Norman window has survived - its head built up from red tiles arranged radially, spoke-wise. If I'm right, the head of the window above the clock is also 'turned in tile' - though the red colour is obscured. Such tiles are generally reckoned to be re-cycled Roman material - quite a thought, but perfectly feasible hereabouts. - Anyway, I am making the photo available to download in larger sizes, for anyone who cares to take a closer look.
