Derry Guildhall viewed from the Peace Bridge
The original Guildhall, constructed in 1890, was destroyed by fire in 1908. The neo-gothic replacement was completed in 1912. With a tower possessing one of the largest clock faces in Ireland.
The land on which the Guildhall stands has been reclaimed from the River Foyle which originally reached to the city walls. During the seventeenth century, quays constructed first of earth and wood and then, later, of stone began to expand out from the walls allowing large ships to tie up even at low tide.
