SO3764 : The Old Rugged Cross, Byton

taken 6 years ago, near to Byton, County of Herefordshire, England

The Old Rugged Cross, Byton
The Old Rugged Cross, Byton
At the edge of St Mary's churchyard the Easter cross is propped up against the ancient yew tree and the broken footpath gate is stuck in the open position. The tin shed door is open, just as it was in a photograph taken here in 2006. The church of 1859 is the latest on the site, a predecessor having been burnt to the ground by the forces of Owain Glyndwr in the 15th century. The yew tree would have been a mere 100 years old at the time.
