Orange sun over Cambridge
Orange sun over Cambridge
The ashen sky is the result of dust from the Sahara and smoke from forest fires in Portugal, swept along in the wake of Hurricane Ophelia whose path was expected to cause widespread disruption in Ireland and Scotland. In eastern England there were no signs of storm but temperatures were oppressively high for the time of year, around 23C. During the next hour the darkness intensified and the sun grew fainter and redder before vanishing into the gathering gloom.
