NZ0416 : The End of the Road

taken 7 years ago, near to Barnard Castle, County Durham, England

The End of the Road
The End of the Road
The Roman Road along Galgate ends on this green near the castle, and a steep gully down to the Tees is now filled with trees. This is the Scar Top, as descriptive a name as you could hope for.

This image was stitched from 3 separate exposures of 6000 x 4000 pixels, producing a composite of 12756 x 4635 pixels; subsequently downsized to 3699 x 1344 to suit Geograph's download limit. The larger image is available on request.
Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is set on a high rock above the River Tees on the fringe of the market town which shares its name.

Now in the care of English Heritage, the castle takes its name from Bernard de Ballliol who founded it in the 12th century. The castle was later developed by Richard III.
