Byton Castle site - the motte
Byton Castle site - the motte
Large earthwork next to the church, site of an early castle. The Border area has an enormous number of castle sites, some clearly evident and others partially or completely destroyed. Byton Castle was only identified as such in 1967 and documentary sources date it to around 1150. Traces of a shell keep and a gatehouse have been found.
