Barnes Street Oasts
Three adjacent oast houses, once owned by Whitbreads, who owned the nearby Beltring Hop Farm.

West oast, twin round kilns, converted to one dwelling. The kiln roofs replaced with shallow pitched roofs. Known as 1 Barnes Street Oasts.

Middle oast, two round kilns, converted to one dwelling. The kiln roofs replaced with shallow pitched roofs. Almost the same in design as the West oast. Known as 2 Barnes Street Oasts, The Maltings.

East oast, one round and one square kiln, converted to two dwellings, known 3 Barnes Street Oasts and Saxted. The building originally has three rounds inline.
Oast Houses
An Oast House is a building used to dry fresh hops before they are sent to the brewers, to be used for flavouring beer. A traditional Oast House consists of the 'oast' and the 'stowage'. The oast was a kiln, with a plenum chamber fired by charcoal at ground floor and the drying floor directly above. The steep pitched roof channelled the hot air through the hops to the top.
