Cotter Force
Cotter Force
Cotter Force is a small waterfall on Cotterdale Beck, a minor tributary of the River Ure, near the mouth of Cotterdale. The artist J. M. W. Turner sketched here in July 1816 for his Yorkshire Sketchbook.

Cotter force shows the local Yoredale facies rocks. The bottom pool has eroded shoft mudstones. The geology sequence grades into mica rich muds and sands before finally the Hawdrow Scar limestone which is more resistant (top fall).
