Gayle Mill - Flags
A variety of ripple marks in these sandstone flags. These belong to Yoredale Facies rocks which were extracted locally for many years and exported using the now disused railway. These Yoredale rocks form a series of repeating cyclothems which go from marine limestone through to muds, sandy muds, sandstones, coal and back to limestone. This sequence has been linked to changing sea levels probably related to ice ages and or subsidence. The sandstones were deposited by lobate deltas and in some cases reworked by tides when the sea flooded again.
