Redevelopment of the Boiler House at Newcastle University
The redevelopment of the Boiler House, originally built in 1923, nears completion. It is being converted for use as a space for student and staff events, such as congregation receptions, musical performance and award ceremonies. As well as the internal refurbishment, the development includes the restoration of the exterior features, including the oak doors, crenelations, and other decorative features. Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
