The kilns were used to roast the iron ore which reduced the weight before onward transportation on the North Eastern Railway's Rosedale branch. The kilns are listed, grade II, with much interesting detail at: LinkExternal link The kilns and their associated tips and other features, the remains of Hollins Mine which was the main source of the ore for the kilns and the 900m long incline which linked the mine to the kilns are all part of a Scheduled Ancient Monument and there is much history and detail at: LinkExternal link
