SK0062 : Hen Cloud from the southern end of The Roaches

taken 9 months ago, near to Upper Hulme, Staffordshire, Great Britain

Hen Cloud from the southern end of The Roaches
Hen Cloud from the southern end of The Roaches
The Roaches are probably named from the French "rochers" for rocks. They form dramatic rock formations as here and rise in two tiers from a pine belt, while below are the distinctive gulleys and gritstone rock faces of Five Clouds. Climbing routes have such names as The Mincer, Crack of Gloom and Death Knoll. The Roaches syncline has successive layers of grit and sandstone. From the top there are fine views to the west in the direction of the Cheshire plain as well as to the south, as here.

This view is at the top of the lower tier. The steps ahead lead up from Rockhall Cottage and the rocks immediately beyond the steps can be seen at LinkExternal link

Hen Cloud is beyond. Hen Cloud forms a much steeper prospect on its western side overlooking the lane at its foot than it does on its gentler sloping north and east sides - see LinkExternal link
