View from Mam Tor
Mam Tor is known as 'The Mother Hill'. Three thousand years ago it was the home of ancient Celtic peoples. A fort once stood on the summit and burial mounds have also been found here dating from the time when bronze was first worked. A well-made path leads to the top which relieves the pressure on this popular climb. In this view from near the trig point at the top, Castleton is clearly seen below with Peveril Castle to the right above the entrance to Peak Cavern. The blot on the landscape beyond is Breedon Hope Cement Works between Castleton and Bradwell.
