Small floodgate, Chesil Cove, Chiswell, Portland
It guards an access point for pedestrians to the promenade high above the beach. According to an information board nearby, the sea wall and promenade formed part of the Chesil Sea Defence Scheme constructed between 1958 and 1965. The sign on the wall, left, indicates the Coast Path. The reverse view is
SY6873 : South West Coastal Path at Chiswell. The wall in the background is of the beautiful creamy limestone, roughly squared, seen in many buildings in Chiswell and arguably more appealing than the well-known white Portland stone.
