Obelisk, Stourhead Gardens
The Obelisk in Stourhead gardens was first built in 1746 as an Egyptian symbol of the ever shining sun. It has been restored twice, it crumbled in the nineteenth century and was restored in 1839-40 and then again after being struck by lightning in 1853. The Obelisk is topped by a metal sun disc ST7734 : Metal sun disc. A memorial plaque on side facing the house was placed there by Colt Hoare 1815, in memory of his grandfather, Henry Hoare
