Bridges over Deptford Creek
The iron structure in this image is a vertical lifting bridge, which carries a railway line over Deptford Creek. This structure, built in 1954, is the third bridge at this site. It has not been raised for many years.
The footbridge in the foreground opened as recently as 2002. Many years previously, there had been a footbridge here, but it had been closed for many years. The bridge is known as Ha'penny Hatch, as there had been a toll of half a penny to cross the footbridge many years ago.
Deptford Creek is the watercourse through which the River Ravensbourne flows as it reaches the River Thames.
