The most imposing of Thetford's three surviving mediaeval parish churches despite is rather cramped position, St Peter's surveys what was the most important junction in town. King Street, the main shopping street heads off to the right with the jettied Bell Hotel on the near corner; Bridge Street behind and White Hart Street ahead carried the main road from London to Norwich long after it became A11, until 1968.
